BTS-Warwick soft-ground CPD course is online 15-17 June

5 May 2021

Knowledge and concepts required by engineers to undertake tunnel design in soft ground are key areas covered by a new online CPD course devised by the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) and Warwick University.

Dr Alan Bloodworth, Course Director of the MSc Tunnelling and Underground Space course at Warwick University’s School of Engineering said: “This course is designed through a collaboration of the BTS and the University of Warwick to meet the training and development needs of the tunnelling community during this time of the pandemic, when it is not possible to attend modules of the MSc Tunnelling and Underground Space at Warwick.”

The aim of the course is to arm attendees with the fundamental knowledge required to undertake tunnel design in soft ground. Via lectures, worked examples, Q&A, discussion and calculation exercises, the three-day tunnel design online course (15-17 June 2021) covers the background required to design tunnel linings in precast concrete and sprayed concrete – the two most common materials currently used in soft ground tunnelling.

Particular features of the course are the establishment of a framework for designing to Eurocodes, and significant content on design with steel-fibre reinforcement. Lecture slides, notes and worked examples will be provided, along with copies of documents referred to in the course (copyright permitting).

Key topics:

  • Initial scheme scoping and conceptual design
  • Fundamental principles of tunnel-lining design
  • Tunnel-design principles using Eurocodes
  • Tunnel-lining analysis
  • Fibre-reinforced concrete for tunnel linings
  • Precast concrete segmental lining design
  • Sprayed concrete-lined tunnel design

Course format:

The course will be held online over three days via Microsoft Teams. Sessions will start at 9.00am and conclude around 4.30pm, with one-hour for lunch (all times in British Summer Time).

Over the three days, around 12 hours will be taken by formal lectures, and the remainder of the time for Q&A, discussion and for delegates to undertake worked examples and receive feedback. An attendance certificate for three days’ CPD will be issued at the end of the course.

Speaker: the main speaker will be Dr Alan Bloodworth.

Course fee: £500. There is a reduced fee for students of £100 if they can give evidence of enrolment provided by their tutor/university.
