Boring Company releases east coast proposal

28 March 2018

USA – Elon Musk's Boring Company has released an outline and alignment for a proposed project on the East Coast to build Loop, "a high-speed underground public transportation system."

The DC-to-Baltimore Loop would consist of the construction of a set of parallel, twin underground tunnels at least 30ft (9m) deep. The company said this transportation system would create a significant public benefit due to decreased commute times, decreased urban congestion, decreased public transportation trip times, decreased transportation costs/fares, and decreased greenhouse gas emissions.

The proposed twin tunnels would run in parallel for approximately 35 miles (56km) from downtown DC to downtown Baltimore. This would serve as the central artery for a potential future transportation network which would hopefully be extended to New York, the company said.

In a Q&A section the company confirmed the it would pay for the 100 per cent privately funded project. It also explained the project would include approximately four TBM launch pits and approximately 20 to 70 ventilation shafts/emergency exits.

Construction estimates include approximately four weeks for the shafts and 12 to 20 months for the tunnel construction.

The City of D.C. issued a permit in February for the Boring Company to begin preparatory and excavation work in a parking lot, the Washington Post reported.
