Bangladesh has signed a memoriam of understanding (MoU) with China for building an underwater tunnel on the Karnaphuli river in Chittagong.

Bangladesh's Secretary of Bridges Khondoker Anwarul Islam and China's Vice Minister of Transport and Communications Chi-Kuo Mao signed the MoU for the project in Beijing.

Foreign ministry officials now in Beijing told press reporters on 10 June that the project will cost USD 1bn.

Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now in Beijing, had extensive discussions with Chinese premier Li Keqiang on 9 June.

This is her third visit to China and the first one since she was elected prime minister for the second consecutive term in January.

Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told reporters after the meeting between the two heads of the governments: "Li Keqiang has praised the socio-economic development of Bangladesh and said that China will remain involved in Bangladesh's development."
