Baku road tunnel to be operational by July

OJSC Construction & Industrial Investment Corporation (Akkord) has completed construction of a closed part of a tunnel on Ziya Buniyadov Avenue in Baku, Azerbaijan Business Center (ABC) reported on 23 June.

The company said that construction of the highway tunnel junction at the intersection of Ziya Buniyadov Avenue and Boyukshor Street began in March 2011.

"The work is carried out to order of Azeryolservis, a company of the Transport Ministry, Gidrotransproekt, is the tunnel designer and Akkord the project contractor. So far, work has been finished in the closed part of the tunnel to be commissioned in July," Akkord said in a statement.

According to the company, the ongoing work concerns asphalt laying on roads running along the tunnel, with a total length of 1,600m, installation of lights inside the tunnel and nearby roads, construction of a roundabout above the closed section of the tunnel, as well as work on the reconstruction of a 140m road running to Baksol settlement.

The total length of the road junction is 610m, the length of the closed part 140m, height 5.5m, width of the road is 23.5m, and width of the dividing strip is 2m.

The tunnel is designed in accord with international standards and is stable for earthquakes.
