The Harding Prize Competition is named after the founder of the British Tunnelling Society, Sir Harold Harding, and is for entrants under the age of 33. Shortlisted papers were presented to the BTS evening meeting on 13 April, at the Institution of Civil Engineers, in London. Jake Rankin, data scientist with J Murphy & Sons Ltd for this project, was voted winner of the 2023 Competition with a paper entitled ‘Artificial Intelligence for Forecasting Tunnelling Progress’. Stories from 50 years of groundwater construction problems

For T&T, David Hartwell takes a long view to reflect upon construction challenges some tunnel projects experienced with groundwater. He was awarded the Skempton Medal by the British Geotechnical Association (BGA), in 2018, in recognition of his outstanding longterm contribution to understanding the interaction between groundwater and tunnelling. The BGA and BTS jointly heard his Skempton Lecture in February 2019

Groundwater is never an insignificant part of the challenge of determining what is below the ground surface. It can be present in so many, often puzzling, ways and brings potential for difficulties. Consequently, examinations and what information can be obtained from such investigations carried out, ideally early on, will help to inform approaches for dewatering to counter – or might be needed to solve – construction challenges.
