Wiener Linien, builder and operator of Vienna’s public transport system, has awarded a €242m (US$294m) contract to the joint venture comprising Hochtief, Swietelsky, and Habau Hoch und Tiefbau for the expansion of the city’s metro in the coming years.

The three companies are equal partners in the joint venture, and the work relates to two construction lots for lines U2 and U5. Preparatory work has already started and construction is expected to take around six years to complete.

Expansion of the metro is key to the Austrian capital’s transportation infrastructure and crucial for mobility in the city.
