Two Kowloon Peninsula road contracts awarded

6 December 2019

Hong Kong – Contracts for the Central Kowloon Route (CKR) and Trunk Road T2 have been awarded to Bouygues Construction. These projects form part of a new trunk road known as Route 6. When completed, Route 6 will provide an east-west link in the region with three lanes in both directions.

The first contract concerns CKR and is for the construction of a 2.8km section of twin-tube tunnel, two access tunnels and a ventilation shaft. The works, which are worth USD 403M, have already begun and the project commissioning is expected in 2025.

The second is a design-build-procurement contract for a 3.4km underwater road tunnel (Trunk Road T2), two ventilation buildings, electrical and mechanical services and additional road construction works. The contract is valued at USD 838M. The works will begin before the end of the year, and the project commissioning is anticipated in 2026.

Both projects have complex geology and a dense urban environment, requiring a variety of excavation methods. The consultant is a joint venture of Arup and Mott MacDonald.
