Saltash repairs

1 July 2004

After eighteen months and nearly US$14.6M, work has finally been completed on the Saltash tunnel in scenic Cornwall, UK. The Highways Agency has been working to upgrade its fixtures and management systems to the latest standards. Overnight works and diversions were used to minimise disruption, but local press reported criticism from residents. The tunnel has upgraded lighting, telephones, speed cameras, CCTV and a redesigned traffic flow. There are no further traffic restrictions planned except in emergencies or for maintenance. The tunnel has previously been the topic of controversy, when cracks appeared in cladding and remedials were claimed to be buckling.
