Overbuild to create 'green' tunnel in Hamburg
6 January 2021German highway company Deges has awarded the joint venture comprising Implenia (35%) and Hochtief (65%) with a €580m (US$711m) contract to build the 2.2km-long Altona noise protection tunnel on the A7 motorway in Hamburg, Germany.
The tunnel, which will result primarily from the overbuild of a widened eight-lane motorway, is the longest of the three Hamburg ‘lids’ designed to protect residents from noise and pollution. As well as significantly reducing residents’ exposure to continual noise, the allotments, parks and gardens created on the tunnel roof will provide a greener environment, reconnecting the two neighbouring districts of Othmarschen and Bahrenfeld.
Implenia will manage the project commercially as part of a working group, while Hochtief will be the technical lead. Work is due to start in April 2021 and take eight years to complete.
