Japan’s Taisei Corporation has holed through three months ahead of schedule on Pakistan’s US$130M, 1.89km long Kohat road tunnel.

The project, designed and supervised by UK consultant Mouchel, is now well on course for completion by the end of this year. Speaking in Kohat recently, project director Pervez Gul said with early tunnel completion, machinery can now be transported ahead of schedule to Dorra Adem Khel for an early construction start on this section of the Indus Highway.

The tunnel is under construction for the National Highway Authority with the assistance of a loan from Japan and forms a strategic link between Peshawar and North-West Frontier province. It is a vital section of the new Indus Highway replacing the dangerous track between Kohat and Darra Adem Khel, shaving 40 minutes off the journey between Peshawar and Kohat.
