Kenyan president orders construction of tunnel

12 December 2012

President Kibaki urged government agencies to seek appropriate design for either a bridge or tunnel across the Likoni channel, in order to address what has become a hindrance to trade between the north and south coast, a national newspaper reported late last week.

The channel is used by more than 5,000 vehicles and 200,000 commuters every day. It is also the gateway for vessels calling into Mombasa port, where the president was speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the second Mombasa port.

The terminal is expected to increase the port¹s handling capacity by an additional 1.2M twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) and to transform Mombasa into a transshipment hub when complete in 2016.
