Hong Kong Southern Link awards

Tunnelling contracts totalling HK$3.1bn (US$397M) will be shared by China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) and a consortium headed by Australia's Leighton Contractors (Asia) for the construction of Hong Kong's 3.8km Kowloon Southern Link. The project is one of the largest tunnelling schemes going ahead in Hong Kong.

The deals were awarded on 1 August by the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC). The largest slice, worth HK$2.018bn (US$260M), has been awarded to the Leighton team which comprises Britain's Balfour Beatty, its Hong Kong offshoot Gammon Construction, Japan's Kumagai Gumi and Australia's John Holland which is also part of the Leighton group. Design consultants are Britain's Mott MacDonald with Australia's Meinhardt which will be responsible for civil, structural, geotechnical and mechanical and electrical design, and Aedas as architect.
