DB Netz proposes new tunnel as part of rail upgrade

8 June 2020

Recently unveiled plans by German rail-infrastructure provider Deutsche Bahn Netz for electrifying the 120km line from Nuremburg to Schirnding via Marktredwitz include the construction of a new 5.5km tunnel. This will be in addition to the modification of over 100 bridges and 10 tunnels that will be required for the introduction of the 15kV, 16.7Hz overhead system.

The new tunnel will be required as part of realigning an 11km-long, tightly-curved section of line between Vorra and Neuhaus. The plans will also mean boring on other parts of the line that will see three existing tunnels bypassed.

Electrification is aimed at boosting links between Bavaria and the Czech Republic. Original plans for completing the line by 2022 have been significantly set back by the Coronavirus pandemic.
