Crossrail’s Canary Wharf Station complete

Work has completed at platform level on Crossrail’s Canary Wharf Station in London, UK. Canary Wharf Contractors, the contractor, constructed a 250 by 30m station box some 28m underground. Twin 7.6m-diameter rings were constructed at both ends of the box ready to receive the westbound TBMs in 2013.

In addition, the contractor drove over 1,000 piles, excavated 300,000t of spoil and had to pump out a little under 100Ml of dock water. Canary Wharf Contractors executive director Cliff Bryant said the company responded well to a very challenging brief in delivering the project on time (in under three years) and under budget.

Crossrail’s director for the ‘central area’ Bill Tucker said, “Construction of Crossrail’s first excavated platform level is now complete and has been delivered five months early by Canary Wharf Group. Preparations will now begin for the arrival of the tunnel boring machines next year.

“When the TBMs break through into the station box from the east they will undergo maintenance before being moved to the other end of the station box where they will then set off on their journey en route to Farringdon via Whitechapel and Liverpool Street stations.”
