BTS 2023 lecture series gets under way

5 January 2023

The British Tunnelling Society’s (BTS) 2023 evening lectures kick off with a presentation on HS2 on January 19.

Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) sublot project director Guillaume Lefrere and sublot deputy project director Jules Arlaud will provide updates on two tunnelling projects across HS2 Area North – the Long Itchington Wood Tunnel and the Bromford Tunnel.

This will be an important year for tunnelling at both sites, and the presentation will provide technical updates including the challenges faced by the tunnelling teams, innovative approaches used on site and some key learnings.

In November last year BBV launched TBM Dorothy for its second 1.6km tunnel under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire. It was initially launched in December 2021 and completed the first tunnel drive – and the first on HS2 – in July. The second bore is due to be completed this summer.

Bromford Tunnel is a 5.6km twin-bore tunnel between Water Orton to Washwood Heath near Birmingham.

The meeting will be held in-person at 18:00 at the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1 Great George Street, London SW1P 3AA and streamed live at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqghdw_tju8
