Bechtel selected as delivery partner for Toronto rapid transit

14 December 2021

Engineering and construction services provider Bechtel has been named as a delivery partner for the Metrolinx Ontario Line in Toronto – Canada’s largest-ever subway expansion programme and the first new subway project in 50 years.

The 15.6km rapid transit line through the city of Toronto will involve a mix of surface, elevated and underground tracks running through dozens of neighbourhoods and bringing transit to more communities.

In preparation for its construction, Bechtel, with sub-vendors Bantrel Co. and Comtech Group, will provide resources, experience and knowledge. Bechtel is expected to bring its expertise of working in similar urban environments to maximise opportunities for contractors to deliver the project, and engage with community and industry stakeholders to address construction concerns.

The line will extend between the southern terminus at or near Exhibition/Ontario Place, to the northern terminus near the Ontario Science Centre. It will have 15 stations, six interchanges with other transport modes, passenger pick-ups and drop-off areas, plus a maintenance and storage facility.

As one of the most significant transit projects in the Greater Toronto area, the line is expected to be a technologically advanced subway system with a high degree of automation, on a par with subways in Paris, Copenhagen and Barcelona. The current anticipated completion date is end of 2030.
