Chelsea-Battersea tunnel nears completion

Great Britain – Work on a new tunnel under the River Thames project in Battersea Park is nearing completion. Costing GBP 18M (22.9M USD), the 330m-long tunnel will transport gas under the Thames between Chelsea and Battersea in West London. Owned by gas distribution company Cadent, the tunnel forms part of a GBP 1bn programme to replace ageing infrastructure in the UK’s capital.

First female Harding Prize winner

Great Britain – After 32 years the Harding prize has been awarded to a female young tunneller. “I am also proud to be the first woman to win since 1986, which is actually the year I was born,” said Leah Jacobs, who works for London Bridge Associates. Jacobs won the competition bringing her paper on “Changing the safety Culture” based on her contribution to the Waterview Connection project in New Zealand.

Kier and Eiffage pick up Carillion HS2 work

Great Britain - Following the total collapse of one of Britain’s largest contractors, Carillion, Kier and Eiffage have picked up its HS2 work. The companies, which were in joint venture with Carillion to deliver GBP 1.4bn of projects in the HS2 programme, confirm that they are offering employment to the 51 Carillion employees including apprentices, currently working on the HS2 joint venture.
