New Zealand – The New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) recently ran a three-day health and safety course in Auckland in recognition of the significant amount of tunnelling activity currently going on in the city. Two major tunnelling projects, City Rail Link and the Central Interceptor sewer project are in the early stages of construction as well as various small utility tunnel schemes.

USA - The Robbins Company has sadly announced the passing of Richard James Robbins, president and CEO from 1958 to 1993. Dick passed away surrounded by family on Thursday May 30, 2019 in Seattle, Washington, USA. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, son Jim and daughter Jennifer.

Jenny Yan elected ITA president

International – Jinxiu Yan has been elected the new ITA President succeeding Professor Tarcisio Celestino from Brazil. Yan, the deputy general manager of the China Railway Academy, won by a narrow margin of 2 votes (32 to 30), beating Arcadis group technical director Eric Leca at the 45th ITA General Assembly held in Naples during WTC 2019.

International – A new form of contract for tunnelling and underground works has been published. The Emerald Book (more formally: “Conditions of Contract for Underground Works”) was produced by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) and the International Tunnelling Association (ITA). It was launched at the World Tunnel Congress in Naples.

In it, New explores tunnelling impact assessments with a view to protecting existing underground assets. The work has been guided by investigations into failures and studies of the geoenvironment of cities and examines present approaches to the issue, while also making suggestions of how the industry might progress in future.
