Central Interceptor project’s TBM ordered

New Zealand – The Central Interceptor wastewater project has ordered a 5.45m-diameter Herrenknecht EPB for its main 13km tunnel. The tunnel depth will vary from 15-110m, with a harbour crossing 15m below the seabed. The finished diameter of the tunnel will be 4.5m.

Subway tunnelling is expected to begin in early 2020.

Great Britain – The Herrenknecht vertical shaft sinking machine has finished its work at Woodsmith Mine, excavating the access shaft for Sirius Minerals transport system to 115m and setting a new VSM world record in the process. The previous record was 84m. The shaft will now be excavated using traditional techniques to the full 360m depth.

Italy – The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), an EUR 3.9bn (USD 4.43bn) natural gas pipeline project in the eastern Mediterranean, has been granted full funding. Great Britain – The first Herrenknecht TBM for the York Potash Project’s Mineral Transport System (MTS) tunnel is undergoing final checks at the factory is due to arrive in February 2019. The 23-mile (37km) tunnel and will be excavated in three separate drives by Austrian contractor Strabag. The first of which will stretch for 8 miles, with the remaining 15 coming following subsequent TBM launches in 2020.

Germany – TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht has been nominated for an innovation award at Bauma, the world’s largest construction equipment trade show. Engineers at the company’s factory in Schwanau will have their fingers crossed at the event in Munich this April.
