TBM reaches Brandenburg Gate

GERMANY – The TBM mining the U5 extension in Berlin has reached its destination. The 6.67m Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM was launched from the Max Engels Forum in June 2013 and reached the Brandenburg Gate in October. The 1,620m-long parallel drives were constructed with overburden ranging from 5 to 17m, and passed underneath the River Spree, Spree Canal, and Schlossplatz.

Waterview Connection breakthrough

NEW ZEALAND – The TBM broke through on the second drive of Auckland’s Waterview Connection project last month. Billed by contractor McConnell Dowell as one of the largest TBMs ever used in the southern hemisphere, Alice, the 14.4m-diameter Herrenknecht EPBM completed its 2.4km-long journey.

Buchan awarded Shieldhall ring supply contract

GREAT BRITAIN – Buchan Underground was recently awarded a contract to supply 3,277 precast rings for the Shieldhall Tunnel project in Glasgow. Each 4.56m-diameter ring is made up of six segments, each weighing 2300kg that equates to over 19,500 segments to be supplied to the project.
