DB Netz proposes new tunnel as part of rail upgrade

Recently unveiled plans by German rail-infrastructure provider Deutsche Bahn Netz for electrifying the 120km line from Nuremburg to Schirnding via Marktredwitz include the construction of a new 5.5km tunnel. This will be in addition to the modification of over 100 bridges and 10 tunnels that will be required for the introduction of the 15kV, 16.7Hz overhead system.

Work begins on Munich underground station

Works are continuing on Munich’s 11km Second Core S-Bahn railway line with the construction of the underground station Munchen Hauptbahnhof beneath the central railway terminal. Work began in late April on diaphragm walls up to 65m deep which will form part of the retaining structure and outer shell of the new underground station, located 41m below ground level. Construction will use the top-down method following the partial demolition of an existing structure.

Filder Tunnel western breakthrough

Germany – The TBM boring the western tube of the 9.5km twin tube Filder Tunnel broke through in late July. As Tunnels and Tunnelling goes to press, the 120m-long, 10.82m-diameter Herrenknecht multi-mode machine is being disassembled and turned around inside a 120m-long cavern. In autumn it will bore a 3.4km section of the eastern tube to complete the tunnel.

GERMANY/SWITZERLAND - A joint venture led by Züblin and Hochtief was commissioned by DB Netz AG to deliver the shell construction of the "Rastatt Tunnel". The tunnel project is part of planning approval section 1.2 of the new railway route between Karlsruhe and Basel. The contract volume amounts to approximately EUR 312M (USD 417.6M).
