BTS announces Northumbria University meeting

The event will feature a talk on the topic: ‘Tunnelling Under 21st Century Building Structures: Bond Street Station Upgrade and the infamous case of Avon House’. Speakers will be Andy Clarke (for Costain Laing O’Rourke), Richard Totty (for Bachy) and Paul Perry (formerly of Halcrow Atkins JV.

CIRIA begins work on ground movement impact guidance

The document, ‘P3155 – construction impact from ground movement – assessment and good practice guidance’, is due to be delivered in spring 2020.

In this issue of Tunnels and Tunnelling International we have devoted the majority of the magazine to a paper by Dr Barry New of the Geotechnical Consulting Group (GCG). In it, New explores tunnelling impact assessments with a view to protecting existing underground assets. The work has been guided by investigations into failures and studies of the geoenvironment of cities and examines present approaches to the issue, while also making suggestions of how the industry might progress in future.

Hyperloop Challenge taken up in Britain

Great Britain – The British Tunnelling Society (BTS) has formed a task force to take on the Hyperloop Challenge. Hyperloop is a rapid transit concept that involves propelling pressurised capsules down reduced-pressure tubes across great distances at enormous speeds. The challenge is to demonstrate a means to reduce the cost of tunnelling by a factor of ten or more, and so make the Hyperloop concept viable.
