UK to celebrate second National Tunnelling Day

Great Britain - The BTS is preparing for the second UK National Tunnelling Day. Spearheaded by the society’s young members group, the event aims to “generate interest in the great number of world class tunnelling projects currently being undertaken in the UK and to promote the industry (and its many professions) to students of all ages and the general public”.

New to deliver Harding Memorial Lecture

Great Britain - Barry New is to deliver the Harding Memorial Lecture at 6pm on 19 January at the ICE in London. An associate for the Geotechnical Consulting Group, New has chosen to address tunnelling impact assessments for existing utility pipelines and tunnel assets.

BTS invites members to soirée

Great Britain - The British Tunnelling Society will throw a soirée for members at the end of September. The Tunnellers’ Soirée, to be held on 30 September from 6.30pm to midnight at the picturesque Theobald’s Park in north London will include a drinks reception, three course buffet dinner and entertainment by the Odyssey Blues and Soul Band. The dress code is smart casual.

Britain launches segmental lining code of practice

GREAT BRITAIN – A specification for the design of concrete segmental linings was launched in mid-April. The document, “Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 8810:2016 – Tunnel Design: Design of concrete segmental linings: Code of practice” was produced by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and lead technical author Arup.

Caisson and shaft construction

Andrew Smith, contracts director for Joseph Gallagher, deals with the construction of shafts and caissons using precast segmental linings together with the use of SCL in shaft sinking operations. Commentary is also given on design considerations for the construction of such structures.

London bids for WTC 2019

GREAT BRITAIN – The British Tunnelling Society has formally announced its candidacy to host the World Tunnel Congress and ITA General Assembly in 2019. The capital London is the city put forward by the BTS steering committee for the bid in January 2016. The vote will take place at WTC 2016 in San Francisco this April.
