National Grid awards LPT2 tunnels contract

Great Britain – National Grid has signed a GBP 400M contract with Hochtief-Murphy JV to deliver the tunnels and shafts for the London Power Tunnels (LPT2) project. The overall scheme will cost GBP 1bn (USD 1.3bn) and take six years to complete. This is the second phase of the LPT project.

Trelleborg expands China production facility

China – Gaskets supplier Trelleborg has expanded its Chinese factory in response to an increase in local demand for tunnel seals. The expansion will see the company produce its Gina gasket locally for the Chinese market, following the addition of a new manufacturing line at its Qingdao facility.

City of Dallas unveils Mill Creek TBM

Texas – The City of Dallas recently unveiled the Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel TBM, it announced December 6. The 37.7ft (11m) by 230ft long machine will excavate a 5-mile (8km) tunnel for flood protection.

Severomuysky Tunnel TBMs ordered

Russia – Two 10.37m-diameter Robbins Crossover (XRE) machines have been chosen to bore the second Severomuysky Tunnel. The tunnel is a 15.5km-long drive that will form part of a new rail line that will supplement the existing Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM).

Two Kowloon Peninsula road contracts awarded

Hong Kong – Contracts for the Central Kowloon Route (CKR) and Trunk Road T2 have been awarded to Bouygues Construction. These projects form part of a new trunk road known as Route 6. When completed, Route 6 will provide an east-west link in the region with three lanes in both directions.

Aecom to provide technical assistance for the Lyon-Turin high-speed rail line

France – Aecom has been awarded a framework contract to provide technical support for the design and construction stages of the Lyon to Turin high-speed rail line, which includes 57.5km twin bored base tunnel between St Jean de Maurienne, France, and Chiomonte in Italy.

TfL finalises Silvertown contract

Great Britain – The contract for the Silvertown Tunnel project has been finalised. The contract had been delayed by legal challenges, but the Riverlinx consortium, comprising Ferrovial’s Cintra, Bam PPP PGGM, Macquarie Capital, Aberdeen Standard Investments and SK E+C has taken the work.

Stuva revises gasket recommendations

Germany – The research organisation Stuva has published an update to its gasket recommendations at its 2019 exposition and conference in Frankfurt. The document, ‘Recommendation for gasket frames in segmental tunnel linings’ combines two previous documents: ‘Testing and application of gasket frames in segmental linings (2005) and ‘Use of gaskets for sealing segmental linings’ (2006).

FIDIC appoints legal head

International – The International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) has appointed Daduna Kokhreidze as its new head of legal and compliance. The role for includes advising the chief executive and president on FIDIC by-laws and statutes, risk management and compliance requirements for the organisation and its operations, as well as contribution to drafting development to FIDIC’s contracts and management of relevant FIDIC committees.

Enbridge completes core work at Mackinac
