Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau/NCC to build West Link's Korsvägen section

The contract value is approximately EUR 385M (USD 463.7M). Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau has a 40 per cent share in the joint venture. Construction start-up is planned for spring 2018 and the project is expected to run until 2026.

"During the tender process, we placed great emphasis on the contractor's plans for carrying out the work, and the proposals have been assessed by a panel," says Bo Larsson, West Link Project Manager at the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). "The bids have been evaluated on the basis of both price and proposals for implementation."

The West Link (Västlänken) is an 8km-long double track railway, including a 6km tunnel under the centre of Gothenburg. The tunnel will connect commuter rail services to routes that pass through the city, and give rise to three new underground stations in Gothenburg.

The 3.2km-long Korsvägen section of the West Link tunnel runs from Landala via Korsvägen and Örgryte/Jakobsdal to Almedal where it joins existing track. The parts of the tunnel in rock consist of a railway tunnel and a parallel service tunnel. Three sections will require concrete tunnels in clay and shafts to be dug. Korsvägen station will be built below ground at the interchange, with three entrances. The station will have one platform and two tracks, with preparatory work undertaken on a further two tracks and another platform. The section is expected to take six years to build.

The contract for the Korsvägen section is one of the five principal West Link contracts. The Gülemak, Astaldi and Segermo consortium has previously been awarded the contract for the Haga section. NCC were awarded an ECI contact for the Central Station section earlier – phase one design. The invitation to tender for the Kvarnberget phase has been issued with the deadline for tenders 23 April. The BEST contract (track, electrics/electronics, signalling and communications) will be put out to tender in early 2019.
