Teams shortlisted for Toronto transit projects

11 August 2020

Six teams have been shortlisted by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx for advance tunnelling work on the Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension in Toronto, Canada.

Teams were selected according to their credentials under criteria which included their design and construction experience and financial strength. Those with the highest scores were shortlisted.

The three teams shortlisted for the Scarborough Subway Extension are Acciona, East End Connectors and Strabag; while for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension the teams are Fast Eglinton Group, North American Tunnel Partners and West End Connectors.

The bidding process conforms to the standard procedure: upon receipt of a request for proposals (RFP), the teams will begin to prepare their submissions in the coming months detailing how they will deliver the project. Once IO and Metrolinx have examined the submissions, they will award the tunnelling contracts, expected to happen in mid-2021.

Scarborough Subway Extension is an extension to Line 2 of around 8km – from Kennedy Station to McCowan Road/Sheppard Avenue.

Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a 9.2km expansion of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT (future TTC Line 5). The extension will run mostly underground, westward from the future Mount Dennis station to Renforth Drive.

To get both projects underway as quickly as possible, tunnelling will begin first, followed by separate contracts for the remaining work, such as building stations, tunnel fit-outs and installation and commissioning.

Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension are two of four priority transit projects announced by the Government of Ontario in 2019 for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas. The other two projects include the Ontario Line and the Yonge North Subway Extension.
