TBM transport and lifting contract awarded for Westerly Storage tunnel

23 July 2019

Ohio – PSC Crane and Rigging has been awarded a contract for the transporting and lifting of a TBM for the Westerly Storage Tunnel 3 project in Cleveland. Jay Dee Contractors is PSC’s customer and the primary lifting portion of the job is (tentatively) scheduled for 26 August.

The contract calls for the reception of 20 TBM components that will arrive via a geared vessel at the Port of Cleveland, the transport of these components to site and the temporary storage of some components due to site constraints.

AJ Bush of PSC said that four components will be loaded to deck barge via direct discharge from geared vessel.  Those units will be unloaded by PSC via a Roll On/Roll Off (RO/RO) operation at a debarkation point secured by PSC. These four components will be transported to the site for lowering by a 650t crawler crane.

The heaviest component weighs 408,000lb (185,000kg) and is 28ft long x 28ft wide x 15ft high (8.5m x 8.5m x 4.5m).

The 3.2km-long, 7.5m-diameter tunnel will reduce CSOs by 328 million gallons annually and protect against floods. It is due to be completed in 2020.
