Atkins makes plans for Sweden’s first high speed rail mainline
Sweden – Atkins has been appointed by the Swedish Transport Administration to develop plans for the country’s first high speed rail mainline. The East Link project will include 30 tunnels ranging from 100m up to 6km, for a total length of 25km.

New cement-free TBM backfill grout
Germany/Austria – MC Bauchemie and Porr have developed a new TBM backfill grout based on a geopolymer that is suitable for use in swelling rock formations. The companies stated that the cement-free filler is sulphate resistant and adequately prevents swelling pressures while providing the usual bedding for securing the tunnel ring.

HS2 signs Euston construction partner contract
Great Britain – Mace/Dragados will deliver the High Speed 2 (HS2) terminus at London Euston. It will act as a construction partner, working with HS2 and the station designers, to coordinate the building of the new station, including platforms, concourse and links to London Underground and other rail services.

IS Cambridge 2020 calls for papers

TAP project secures funding
Italy – The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), an EUR 3.9bn (USD 4.43bn) natural gas pipeline project in the eastern Mediterranean, has been granted full funding. Mott MacDonald was the lenders’ technical advisor on the project and performed technical due diligence on TAP’s design, construction and operational plans.

Turkey – Two new Terratec 6.56m diameter EPBMs have been recently delivered to the Halkali-Yeni Havalimani Metro JV on the Halkali-Istanbul new airport metro line, which was awarded to a consortium comprising Özgün Yapı and Kolin by the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (AYGM).

The tunnel forms part of a new 5.2km-long section of the A44, it is a twin tube installation that stretches for 4,147m in the north tube and 4,204m in the south.

Herrenknecht nominated for Bauma award
Germany – TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht has been nominated for an innovation award at Bauma, the world’s largest construction equipment trade show. Engineers at the company’s factory in Schwanau will have their fingers crossed at the event in Munich this April.

Finans Merkezi- Göztepe TBMs arrive in Istanbul
Turkey – The two TBMs set to mine the Finans Merkezi- Göztepe section of the Istanbul Metro have been successfully tested and accepted at the site. The section forms part of the 13km-long Ümraniye-Ataşehir-Göztepe line. The contractor is the Gulermak, Kolin & Kalyon Joint Venture.

Chelsea-Battersea tunnel nears completion
Great Britain – Work on a new tunnel under the River Thames project in Battersea Park is nearing completion. Costing GBP 18M (22.9M USD), the 330m-long tunnel will transport gas under the Thames between Chelsea and Battersea in West London. Owned by gas distribution company Cadent, the tunnel forms part of a GBP 1bn programme to replace ageing infrastructure in the UK’s capital.

Sirius Minerals announces updates to York Potash costs
Great Britain – Sirius Minerals has signed a design and build contract with Strabag for the remaining mineral transport system (MTS) drives on the York Potash Project. Ground and risk assessments will see the cost increasing by USD 400-600M.

Crossrail services to begin in late 2019
Great Britain – The central London portion of Crossrail will begin service in autumn next year. The schedule slip of almost a year is necessary to “complete the finl infrastructure and extensive teting required to ensure the Elizabeth line [as it will be called] opens as a safe and reliable railway.”

Boyneburg tunnel contract awarded

As Tunnels and Tunnelling goes to press, the 120m-long, 10.82m-diameter Herrenknecht multi-mode machine is being disassembled and turned around inside a 120m-long cavern. In autumn it will bore a 3.4km section of the eastern tube to complete the tunnel.
