Melbourne excavation shed built

Australia – The first of three sheds to be built in the Melbourne CBD to reduce noise, dust and light from construction of the Metro Tunnel is now complete.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan today inspected works inside the acoustic shed in February. More than 20 metres high and 70 metres long, the shed is capable of fully enclosing construction activity.

In a boost for local jobs and industry, the shed is made from 290 tonnes of Australian-made steel and built by local fabricators in Orange and Dandenong.

The Metro Tunnel will untangle the City Loop, creating more space for more trains to and from the suburbs across Melbourne.

Premier Daniel Andrews said, “Inside this massive shed excavation is underway to build the new State Library Station. That’s good news for passengers, and for Victorian workers and industries. We’re building the turn-up-and-go train network Melbourne needs – where trains come so often you can throw away the timetable.”

Minister for public transport Jacinta Allan added, “The completion of this massive shed and start of excavation works is a sign of just how far this project has come since the former Liberal Government abandoned it, and the future of our train system. We’re creating thousands of local jobs and using locally manufactured materials to build this huge public transport project.”
