Implenia to build world’s deepest metro station

6 May 2021

Swiss construction company Implenia has signed a contract with Stockholm Region for the construction of a new subway station and associated tunnels at Sofia in the Swedish capital. The order is worth around US$85m.

Located around 100m below ground, the station will be one of the deepest in the world, with eight high-speed elevators whizzing commuters to and from the platforms in a claimed 30 seconds.

The station will form part of Stockholm's Blue underground line which is being extended from the centrally-located Kungsträdgården, to Nacka in the southeast of the capital, and to Hammarby Sjöstad in the south.

In addition to the proposed subway station, Implenia will build elevator shafts, two single-track tunnels for the subway and a parallel service tunnel. Drill and blast will be used to construct a total of 4.6km of tunnels.

Implenia's contract primarily involves implementation work and planning of concrete work. Overall planning will be carried out by the client. Construction work is proposed to run from Q3 / 2021 to Q4 / 2025.

The contract is a continuation of the 1.5km London Viaduct access tunnel, awarded to Implenia in 2019 by Stockholm Region. Work on this is currently underway and is paving the way for the proposed main tunnels at Sofia.
