Gaumda / AWEC joint venture secures Taiwan rail contract

A Gamuda and Asia World Engineering & Construction joint venture has won a NT$14.5bn (US$449m) contract for an underground railway and commuter station in Taiwan’s TaoYuan city.

The contract, which is part of the TaoYuan City Underground Railway Project, includes a 3.74km twin-track cut and cover tunnel and an underground commuter station at PingZhen. It is due to be completed by 2030.

It is Malaysia-based Gamuda’s sixth project in Taiwan. The company’s first project in Taiwan was 3.86km of the 43km Kaohsiung Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit Line and current projects include a 7.3km 161kv underground transmission line from Songshu to Guanfeng.

AWEC is a Taiwan-based company principally involved in general civil construction, specialising in geotechnical, hydraulic, architectural and civil engineering.
