CRS twins culvert in Ontario

14 September 2017

Canada – CRS Tunnelling announced September 11 it has completed a 61m, 1,800mm RCP culvert to twin an existing, like diameter culvert under Highway 400 in Barrie, Ontario, for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

Crews installed the culvert with an Akkerman Series II 720 TBM and tunnel boring system in under a week’s time. The ground conditions comprised compacted sand and sandy clay.

The new culvert will assist in the conveyance of Hotchkiss Creek and features a 0.3m culvert embedment below the creek to facilitate fish migration. The work is part of the Highway 400 widening project, which will replace a six-lane overpass structure. Morrison Hershfield is the project’s designer.
