BTS urges tunnel engineers to enter Harding Prize
7 January 2021Entries for the 2021 Harding Prize are now being sought by The British Tunnelling Society (BTS). The competition is open to all young tunnel engineers who, at the end of 2020, were aged 33 or under. The closing date for submissions is 26 February 2021.
The Harding Prize is named after the founder chairman of the Society, Sir Harold Harding. Entrants must submit an original paper relating to any aspect of tunnelling which they consider will be of interest to those in the tunnelling industry.
The papers will be reviewed by the BTS Sub-Committee and authors of selected papers will be invited to present to the BTS meeting on Thursday 15 April 2021. The meeting will be an online-only event to comply with covid-19 restrictions. The winner will be presented with a copy of Sir Harold Harding’s book ‘Tunnelling history and my own involvement’, as well as a cheque for £500 and a certificate.
Finalists whose papers are selected for presentation will each receive a cheque for £100, while all remaining entrants whose papers achieve an approved standard will receive a cheque for £50. The winner and finalists will also have the added bonus of seeing their papers published in Tunnels and Tunnelling International – the world’s leading tunnelling journal. Papers not selected for the final presentation may be published in the ICE Proceedings published by the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The BTS encourages young tunnel engineers to take up this opportunity to raise their profile and make their work visible to the civil engineering community.
