Breakthrough on East End Crossing

12 September 2014

USA - Work on the East End Crossing project in Kentucky achieved a significant milestone on September 5, completing the breakthrough of the southbound tunnel beneath the historic Drumanard property.

The 1,700ft (518m) tunnel is part of a major road infrastructure project connecting highways in Kentucky and Indiana.

Approximately 120ft (36.5m) of earth still needs to be blasted and removed from the northbound tunnel, with a breakthrough for the northbound side scheduled for approximately October 1.

Blasting and excavation inside both tunnels will continue into the summer of 2015 to remove the bottom 10ft of the tunnel.

WVB East End Partners is a consortium of Walsh Investors LLC, VINCI Concessions, and Bilfinger Project Investments. In November 2012, WVB was selected as the preferred bidder with a proposal to complete the East End Crossing in October 2016 at a cost of USD 763M, 23 per cent less than previous estimates.
