Billy Bishop Island Airport tunnel to break ground

18 January 2012

The Billy Bishop Toronto Island Airport pedestrian tunnel will break ground in February. The link between Toronto and the airport was in its final design stages as TTNA went to press.

The client, Toronto Port Authority (TPA), received the green light from municipal and federal governments in July and October respectively. In November it announced that Forum Infrastructure Partners was the preferred proponent to design, build, finance, maintain and operate the tunnel.

Forum Infrastructure Partners includes PCL Constructors as the contractor, Arup as designer and Technicore as ‘tunnelling experts’. Construction will last approximately two years finishing in spring 2014.

Currently the only way to reach the airport, the 14th busiest in Canada in 2010, is by ferry.
