Bergen Point tunnel contract moves forward

US – Suffolk County Department of Public Works (SCDPW) in New York awarded the Bergen Point WWTP outfall replacement contract to low bid contractor OHL/Posillico/SELI Overseas in January.

The USD 187.78M bid, opened in July 2017, is for replacing the existing PCCP outfall pipe from the Bergen Point treatment plant to the Barrier Island with an approximately 14,2000ft- (4,328m-) long tunnel, 12ft (3.m) in diameter, among other work.

According to Gall Zeidler Consultants, which has provided consulting and technical services to project consultant CDM Smith, the ground comprises sediments over metamorphic bedrock, upper glacial, boulder/cobble till moraines, Gardiners clay, marine sand and clays, deposits of clay, silt, sand and gravel, clay deposit, and sand.

SCDPW officials said work is expected to start in March.
