Attention young tunnel engineers: the Harding Prize is open for entries

12 October 2021

Named after the founding chairman of the British Tunnelling Society, Sir Harold Harding, the annual Harding Prize has once again opened for the submission of papers on tunnelling topics.

Open to all tunnel engineers who at the end of the previous year were aged 33 or under, the competition seeks original papers dealing with any aspect of tunnel design, construction or consultancy which the writers consider will be of interest to the tunnelling fraternity.

Papers will be reviewed by the BTS Sub-Committee and the successful authors will be required to make an oral presentation to a BTS meeting on Thursday 21 April 2022.

The winner will receive a cheque for £500, a certificate and a copy of the BTS 50th Anniversary Book, as well as two tickets to the BTS Annual Dinner in London in May 2022 where the presentation will be made.

Other finalists, who will also be required to make a presentation, will receive £100. All remaining entrants whose papers reach the required standard will receive £50.

As an added bonus, papers from the winner and finalists will receive international recognition by being published in Tunnels & Tunnelling International – the globally-respected magazine for the tunnelling sector and the official magazine of the British Tunnelling Society.

The closing date for submission is 11 February 2022.

Applications should be made by email only to bts@britishtunnellingsociety.org.uk
