India – Patel Engineering has ordered a Terratec TBM for the AMT-II water transfer project in Maharashtra, western India. The project calls for a 3.2m hard rock gripper TBM to complete the two drives that form the 5.5km transfer tunnel.

Ground conditions will comprise mixed basalt and the TBM will be equipped with 22 15” back-loading disc cutters, as well as anti-wear plates and lubrication systems to assist with wear prevention and dust suppression. The machine will be fitted with a probe drilling system for probing and grouting of the ground ahead of the TBM; as well as rock bolters, a steel arch erector and shotcrete pump for lining activities.

The AMT-II tunnel is one of a number of projects currently being undertaken by the client, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, to augment and improve its water distribution system in order to meet increased demand and ensure reliable supply.

A spokesperson for the manufacturer said that it was the 25th machine delivered to India in the last six years, accounting for more than all other TBM manufacturers combined.
