Frequently asked questions

To assist you in using tunnelsonline.info here are some frequently asked questions.

I am a T&TI subscriber. How do I log in with my free access number?

At the top of this page you will see a grey bar with the words:

'Activate account'

If you click on the link you will be taken to a screen where you can enter your subscription number.

Enter your six digit subscription number (starting with the letters TUN - this can be found on the wrapper of your magazine) here and click on the button marked Activate account.

You will be presented with some boxes to fill in: Please enter information in the boxes marked with an asterisk: choose your own username and password, give us a check question and answer, and tell us your email address (please ensure you make a note of your username for future reference!).

When you have completed this form, click on the button marked submit and you can then return to T&TI online with full access.

You need only go through this process the first time you visit tunnelsonline.info. Once you have assigned yourself a username and password, you will be recognised automatically if you are using your own computer. If you are using another computer anywhere in the world you can log in with the username and password you have given yourself.

If you get the following message:

This number has already been issued a username/password

this means that your subscription number has already been used. Return to the home page of tunnelsonline.info and enter the username and password that you chose when you visited the first time (if you don't know these, please refer to the 'Forgotten password' or 'Forgotten username' links above).

If you are not a subscriber If you are not a subscriber, you can still access a large portion of the site, however you will only be able to view the headlines, and in some cases a brief introduction, of any stories or articles on the site.

We have a company subscription: can several people use tunnelsonline.info?

Yes. Once you have a username and password, anyone anywhere can use that username and password to log in to tunnelsonline.info.

However, only one person at a time can log in with that username and password. So if a colleague is already using tunnelsonline.info and you try to log in with the same username and password you will have to wait until your colleague has finished, or ask them to logout of the site.

If you need to have more than one employee use the website simultaneously you will need to take out another subscription to tunnelsonline.info.

Beware of letting your username and password become freely known: armed with this information others can amend all your details, including the username and password itself. In this way someone else could potentially exclude you from tunnelsonline.info.

Why do I get an error message saying "already in use" even although no-one else in the office is logged on?

If a user is logged in with a particular username/password, no-one else will be able to log in with that username and password. They will get an 'already in use' message.

If a user is logged in with a particular username/password and walks away from the machine, they will be automatically logged out after 20 minutes - ie after 20 minutes of no activity (page requests) we assume the user has gone away and log them out. Within the 20 minute period, if someone tries to log in with the same username and password, they will be told the account is in use.

If a user shuts their browser down, again they will be logged out after 20 minutes. This is because we have no way of telling whether they have actually shut down the browser or are just taking a long time reading an article for example - no activity is no activity, so we assume after 20 minutes that they have gone and log them out.

If a user is logged in with a particular username/password, but clicks the Log out from this site button, they are immediately logged out. So someone else can immediately log in with the same username/password.

So for example:
User 1 is logged in.
User 1 shuts down his browser (and so assumes he is logged out) so his colleague can log in.
User 2 tries to log in (within the 20 minute period) and gets and 'already in use' message.
User 1 goes back, restarts browser. He is within his 20 minute period so is straight in.

To avoid this problem, people sharing a login should always click the 'log out from this site' link - this will immediately log them out and allow others to use the login straight away.

I have taken out a free trial. Why haven’t I received an email from you with my password?

The email with your free trial password is sent to you automatically and instantly when you click on the submit button. You should receive it within a few minutes - subject to any possible delays from your email service provider.

There are a couple of reasons why you might not receive it. The most likely is that you have accidentally typed your email address incorrectly, and the email we have sent has therefore not reached you. Or there may have been a problem with your email service provider so that our message could not be delivered.

Here’s what to do.

First, return to tunnelsonline.info and sign up for a free trial again, making sure that you include the correct email address. If your request is accepted, then proceed normally: the email with your new password should arrive within minutes.

If you receive an error message saying:

Our records show that you have already taken out a trial. To view the site you must now subscribe.

then your previous free trial was accepted, and the trial period has expired. In this case, please email subscriptions@tunnelsonline.info and ask us to re-enter your free trial.

Can I change my tunnelsonline.info password? How about my email address?

Yes. Once you have logged into tunnelsonline.info - Edit your details will appear on the grey bar at the top of the page. Here you will be able to amend your password, email address, and any other contact information you have given us.

When I log in why does the word EXPIRED come up next to my name?

This message means that your subscription (or your BTS membership) has expired. To access the site you will need to renew your subscription. If you have taken a free trial you will now need to take a paid subscription.

How can I pass a story on to a friend or colleague?

Simply find the story that you want to forward. Click on the button marked Email to a friend (top left of the page). Enter your contact information and your friend’s email address.

Click on submit and the story will be sent.

I’ve forgotten my password. What should I do?

Click on Forgotten password (located next to the login box, or on the 'My Account' menu). Answer the check question that you gave us, and your password will be emailed to you automatically and instantly.

I’ve forgotten my username. What should I do?

You cannot access the site without your username. Please try not forget it!

If you truly have forgotten it, email subscriptions@tunnelsonline.info and we will help you.
