VMT, the specialist for guidance systems for segmentally lined tunnels (SLS-T), has expanded its product portfolio to include a navigation system for roadheaders (SLS-TM). To date, 17 systems have been supplied and the system concept has now been applied to excavators and mechanised bolting rigs, says VMT.

Based on a motorised theodolite, the position of the cutting tool is displayed continuously on the machine monitor in near real-time, permitting the machine driver precise excavation. VMT says that expensive and time-consuming rework is avoided and production times are shortened significantly as a result.

With the help of the optional profile analysis software, a 3D image of the excavation profile can be calculated from the recorded movements of the cutter arm and displayed in the site office immediately. The cutter arm’s overbreak and underbreak are documented by reports that can, says VMT, be easily created.

With the WLAN tunnel data network developed by VMT, the SLS-TM navigation system can be integrated into the existing site network. “This,” says VMT, “makes it possible to carry out production data saving, representation of the tunnelling progress and remote maintenance of the system in the site office. Additional network compatible equipment can be integrated into the WLAN tunnel network at any time.“

The company concludes: “The use of the SLS-TM increases profile quality, accelerates tunnelling, and reduces project costs.”
