Twin tunnels supplement Singapore canal

Singapore – Herrenknecht recently released a report on the successful completion of a drainage tunnel in Singapore. The project, which broke through in December 2017, required the construction of 1,000m-long twin tunnels with an excavated diameter of 5,250mm and a minimum distance between the tubes of 2.46m.

TBMs make double breakthrough on Follo Line

Norway – Two TBMs made the first breakthroughs on the 22km Follo intercity rail line in Oslo today. There are a total of four Herrenknecht TBMs excavating the project, as well as drill and blast work.

Breakthrough at Whangaparaoa

New Zealand – The sea outfall project at Whangaparaoa broke through on 2 August after four months of excavation. The 1,930m-long drive was undertaken by McConnell Dowell using a Herrenknecht AVN 1000DP with an excavation diameter of 1,220mm. The drive is the longest yet for the German manufacturer’s Direct Pipe system.

Filder Tunnel western breakthrough

Germany – The TBM boring the western tube of the 9.5km twin tube Filder Tunnel broke through in late July. As Tunnels and Tunnelling goes to press, the 120m-long, 10.82m-diameter Herrenknecht multi-mode machine is being disassembled and turned around inside a 120m-long cavern. In autumn it will bore a 3.4km section of the eastern tube to complete the tunnel.

Herrenknecht holds vocational training day

Germany – Herrenknecht hosted its third career open day earlier this month. The TBM manufacturer set up 15 stations to show each apprenticeship task within the company. Some 300 young people, plus parents, visited Schwanau for the event.

Perth Airport Link TBMs intermediate break through

Australia - The two TBMs boring the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth have broken through to the Airport Central Station. Salini Impregilo-NRW was chosen to build the 8.5km line, of which 8km is underground, with a 7m diameter. So far, some 2km have been bored and the TBMs will undergo servicing for a month before continuing.

Rokycany-Pilsen line completes

Czech Republic – Twin 9.89m-diameter 4.15km-long tunnels were successfully mined by a Herrenknecht multi-mode TBM (EPB to open single shield). Breakthrough took place in October 2017 and the tunnels form part of the Rokycany-Pilsen rail line.

Dugway tunnel makes breakthrough

USA - Salini Impregilo and its U.S. subsidiary The Lane Construction Corporation announced April 4 they have completed the excavation of the Dugway Storage Tunnel (DST), a USD 153M project in Cleveland, Ohio, to help reduce the flow of raw sewage into Lake Erie.

Mammoet delivers first Tideway TBM

Great Britain - Mammoet has delivered the first TBM to the Thames Tideway Tunnel project in Central London. The machine was delivered to the 7km west section of the project. It is now in the hands of the contractor, a JV of Bam Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty.

Kpone power plant drives complete

Ghana – Cooling lines for a new oil and gas power plant close to Accra called for a microtunnelled solution. Two tunnels, one for sea water intake and the other for outfall were constructed by Coleman Microtunnelling (a subsidiary of Australia’s Bothar Group) using a 2.5m-diameter Herrenknecht AVND2000AB utility tunnelling machine.

Ismailia TBMs break through after Suez drives

Egypt - Two breakthroughs for the new Ismailia road tunnel project took place in December 2017. The first was on 4 December, while the second machine met daylight on 23 December.
