Atkins makes plans for Sweden’s first high speed rail mainline

Sweden – Atkins has been appointed by the Swedish Transport Administration to develop plans for the country’s first high speed rail mainline. The East Link project will include 30 tunnels ranging from 100m up to 6km, for a total length of 25km.

Upgrading bond Street

London Underground Bond Street Station Upgrade Project (BSSU) is due for completion and open to public in April. In December’s British Tunnelling Society Meeting, the project was told from the perspective of the SCL designer and the contractor working in a one team environment. Through innovation and utilising the latest technology they pushed the SCL design boundaries and developed a safe system of work by minimising the impact on infrastructure while optimising the excavation times to create necessary additional underground space. Britain launches segmental lining code of practice

GREAT BRITAIN – A specification for the design of concrete segmental linings was launched in mid-April. The document, “Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 8810:2016 – Tunnel Design: Design of concrete segmental linings: Code of practice” was produced by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and lead technical author Arup.

HS2 Phase One Delivery Partner confirmed

GREAT BRITAIN – An Arup Atkins JV has been appointed as the design consultant for the Stonehenge Tunnel project. The project is part of the A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down Improvement Scheme, which also includes a bypass of nearby village Winterbourne Stoke.

Arup-Atkins win Thames Tideway West consultancy

GREAT BRITAIN – Atkins and Arup will provide design and engineering services on the west section of the Thames Tideway project. The contractors for this section, BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty, will tunnel 6km of 7.2m-diameter tunnel from the Acton Storm Tanks at the extreme west of the scheme, to the start of the central section at Carnwath Road.

First MTR caverns in 25 years open on West Island Line

HONG KONG – The West Island Line (WIL) has opened. The 3.3km-long extension to the Island Line connects three new stations: Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong University, and Kennedy Town, to the existing route at Sheung Wan Station. Kennedy Town is a cut and cover station, while Sai Ying Pun and Hong Kong University are deep cavern stations.
