Great Britain – The Prime Minister has announced a review into “whether and how we proceed” with High Speed 2 (HS2). The review has been announced ahead of the ‘Notice to Proceed’ decision for Phase 1, which is due by the end of 2019. The review should be complete in autumn 2019.

Sydney Metro CBD breakthrough

Australia – The first TBM has broken through into the Pitt Street metro station in Sydney’s central business district (CBD). TBM ‘Nancy’, a double shield hard rock gripper machine manufactured by Herrenknecht has tunnelled 6km through sandstone and shale since launching from Marrickville in October. TBM ‘Mum Shirl’, excavating the parallel tunnel, is a few hundred metres behind.

Chelsea to battersea tunnel surface settlements

Monitoring of ground surface movements induced by the construction of the Chelsea to Battersea Pipeline Tunnel project is presented as part of this case study. The surface settlements induced by the shaft construction have been analysed and compared with current methodologies and information from recent projects. Movements from excavation and construction of the tunnel are also analysed, and back-analysis of volume losses is presented. HNTB appoints Murali Hariharan senior tunnel engineer

California – Murali Hariharan has been appointed senior tunnel engineer for the national tunnel practice of HNTB Corporation; the company announced July 30. He continues working on the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor Project in Los Angeles as lead engineer for construction support services and has undertaken geotechnical tasks on XpressWest High Speed Rail project from Victorville, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada, being provided at an accelerated schedule. He is based in HNTB’s downtown Los Angeles office.

Liebherr launches slurry wall cutter

Austria – Liebherr’s deep foundations division released a slurry wall cutter to market at Bauma 2019. Liebherr expects that it will generally be equipped to a 130t duty cycle crawler crane (the company’s own is the HS8130.1), although other capacities are feasible, depending on the size and depth of the slurry wall.
