Workers missing after Cambodia tunnel collapse

11 December 2012

Three workers are still missing in a rupture of a concrete tunnel at the Atay hydropower dam being constructed in western Cambodia, officials have told local news reporters. The incident happened on 1 December 2012 at the upper part dam when a tunnel on the left side dam collapsed, causing water in the reservoir to flood the dam’s lower part.

The USD 38M project is invested by the China Datang Corporation. The firm has set up a working group to investigate its cause, and experts from China arrived at the scene two days after the incident to gather first-hand information. The China Datang Corporation had ordered a thorough search for the missing men.

The 120mw Atay hydropower dam will supply power to the Electricity of Cambodia when the construction is completed. Construction started in May 2008 and is still expected to complete in November 2013.
