Work on Strood halted following accident

22 March 2004

Works for the Strood & Higham Tunnel relining project, located in the South-East of the UK, have been halted following an accident on Thursday 4 March.

A member of staff working for contractor Amalgamated Construction Ltd (AMCO), on behalf of Network Rail, sustained injuries as a result of a chalk fall. The worker was taken to hospital and has since been released; he is now recovering at home. Network Rail is carrying out an investigation into the incident.

Haswell Consulting Engineers, assisting in the provision of construction management services for the 3.5km long relining project, confirmed the incident at Strood & Higham was being investigated by the UK's Health & Safety Executive (HSE). The site will remain closed until the HSE compete their enquiries.
