Sydney Metro West shortlist revealed

2 September 2020

Three consortia have been shortlisted for two main tunnelling packages on the Sydney Metro West Project, it was revealed recently.

The three shortlisted bidders are:

Acciona Australia and Ferrovial Australia
Gamuda and Liang O’Rourke Australia
John Holland, CPB Contractors and Ghella Australia

In order to promote greater competition in delivering Australian tunnel works, the project will be tendered in two stages: first, all three consortia will compete for the Central Tunnelling Package comprising 11km of twin tunnels from Sydney Olympic Park to The Bays. Once awarded, the two previously unsuccessful bidders will then go head-to-head to compete for the Western Tunnelling Package, comprising 9km of twin tunnels from Sydney Olympic Park to Westmead.

Completion of the Sydney West Metro will double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta (CBD) with the Sydney CBD, moving around 40,000 people per hour in each direction. It is envisaged the project will create around 10,000 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs during construction.

Enabling works are expected to start on the line in late 2020. The project will see a total of four TBMs undertake the excavation, beginning with the first expected on site in 2022.
