Austria-based construction group Strabag and consortium partner GP Group AD have won an order for the construction of an 11.2km railway line and eight tunnels in Bulgaria.

The US$231m Lot 3 contract forms part of the largest rail project in Bulgaria for the past 50 years and includes 5.5km of tunnels, as well as viaducts, bridges and signalling infrastructure. The line, for both passenger and rail traffic, will see operating speeds of up to 160km/h.

Co-financed by the EU, the project is expected to take 5.5 years to complete. It is one of numerous lots on the 51km-long Elin Pelin-Kostenets railway line modernisation which has a total contract value of US$592m.
