A joint venture between Skanska and Taisei Corporation recently won the contract to build the 1.5km long Sitina tunnel in Slovakia.

Work will start this spring on the NATM driven twin-tube tunnel that will form part of the D2 motorway between the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, and Brno in the Czech Republic. The US$90.5M project will be financed via an intergovernmental agreement between Slovakia and Japan.

Of the 18 other tunnels on the Slovakian motorway network, two are nearing completion, and two have recently been bored through with pilot TBMs. Construction on the remaining 14 should begin in 2004.

For further details about this tunnel, and 18 others that are being constructed on the Slovakian motorway network, see T&TI February 2003, p9.
