Shortlisted bidders named for Sydney airport metro

1 March 2021

Three bidders have been shortlisted to deliver the tunnelling works for Sydney Metro’s Western Sydney Airport rail line.

The New South Wales (NSW) government has shortlisted:

Acciona Construction (Australia)
Bouygues Construction (Australia)
John Holland Gamuda JV

The US$8.5bn project involves the construction of 10km of twin-tube, TBM-bored rail tunnels and the construction of six stations on the 23km-long line that will stretch from St Mary’s Station in the north to Western Sydney Aerotropolis in the south. Both the NSW and Australian governments are contributing to the project, with the latter having pledged around US$4bn.

Due to the nature of the terrain, the alignment will combine underground, at-grade and elevated sections. Six new metro stations will be constructed at St Mary’s, Orchard Hills, Luddenham, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal and Western Sydney Aerotropolis. Where not elevated, stations will be constructed by either cut-and-cover or open cut. The airport will have two stations on site to provide aviation passengers with sufficient access: one station will be at the airport’s integrated international and domestic terminal, the other at the on-airport business park. Tunnelling will be arranged over two sections: from St Mary’s southwards to just before Orchard Hills station, and from Airport Business Park to Aerotropolis.

The new line is planned to become the transport spine for the Greater Western Sydney region linking residential areas to employment hotspots and to the new Western Sydney International Airport. The line is scheduled to open in 2026 at around the same time the airport opens for passenger services.
