Ove Arup and Partners has won a contract from Hong Kong’s MTR Corp to carry out the preliminary design of a US$731M extension to the Shenzhen Metro in southern China.

Arup will be responsible for designing the 16.5km second stage of Line 4, which will be built in both tunnel and on elevated structure. It beat off a challenge from three other consultants for the project, which is expected to start construction by the end of next year.

Line 4 comprises 21km of underground and elevated railway between the Huanggang border checkpoint and Longhua. Phase 2 runs southwards from Longhua and will connect with the first phase currently being built.
